Supporting a Move: Downsizing and Decluttering

Moving at any time in life can feel overwhelming, but this is especially so as one gets older and has lived for many years in the same home. There are all sorts of reasons many need to in later life: sometimes it’s about transitioning to a more manageable property, or relocating closer to family, or preparing for a different way of living that involves more care. In every circumstance, the process involves more than just packing boxes - it’s emotional and deeply personal.

This is where ILA can play a helpful role in ensuring any move feels manageable.

We Understand…

That for many people, a home represents decades of memories, milestones, and is entwined with identity. Downsizing isn’t just about ‘stuff’, it’s an emotional process that is about letting go, making decisions for the future, and stepping into a new chapter.

We’re not here to just help with the practical side of things, we’re here to provide a human, comforting approach, which centres the feelings of our clients in how we deal with preparing for any move.

We understand how important it is to make the right decisions in what goes and what stays… And we never want our clients to feel rushed or sidelined in a process that is so instrumental for their new beginning.

It’s also important to recognise that for some older people, having lots of ‘things’ can go beyond sentimentality. Hoarding behaviours are more common than many realise, particularly in later life.

Research by the Chartered Institute of Housing suggests around 2–5% of the UK population experience hoarding behaviours, equating to over a million people, and studies consistently show that hoarding is more common, and is often more severe, in older adults.

For us, this highlights the importance of approaching decluttering with sensitivity, not judgement. What may look like excess, can be linked to anxiety, loss, or long-standing habits built over decades, and we are experienced in helping others in dealing with these issues, so feel confident helping our clients in a way that is bespoke and fits them, the best way.

Planning with Confidence

Downsizing and decluttering isn’t just about reducing belongings, it’s about preparing for a new space and lifestyle.

We’re able to help individuals visualise their new home and what will realistically fit, whilst prioritising comfort, accessibility, and safety.

We provide a structured, paced approach, which is especially important where clutter has built up over time, helping individuals stay in control of decisions and feel confident in their decision-making.

Wellbeing at the Forefront

Wellbeing and care is always at the heart of the work we do, and we know that clutter and having too many things can begin to impact safety and wellbeing in our client’s own homes.

We work with our clients and their families (if needed) to play a crucial role in:

• Identifying any potential risks within the home early (if there are a lot of belongings)

• Coming up with a manageable plan that doesn’t feel overwhelming

• Coordinating with family or services

• Supporting safer, gradual change

We want to ensure our clients are able to focus on the transition of moving itself, rather than the practical logistics (which can very quickly feel overwhelming!).

Recently, we’ve helped clients attend viewings, organise removal quotes, dealt with the changes in utility payments, helping to coordinate the move across multidisciplinary teams and services. We do the leg-work so our clients can focus on what matters most: feeling confident and comfortable in their move.

We can support packing and labelling, arrange donations, recycling, or specialist clearance, ensure essentials are ready for moving day, and provide emotional support.

We recognise that downsizing and decluttering are rarely just practical tasks, they are life transitions which require care and thought.

As with all areas of our work, we combine practical help with empathy and understanding, so that you’re not just moving home, but moving forward with confidence.
